Removal of TCA from cork stoppers using adsorbents and biosorbents
Non-invasive adsorption system for TCA removal in cork stoppers using biosorbents
or
Detail description
The project develops a non-invasive system using adsorbents and biosorbents to remove TCA and other volatile aromas from cork stoppers, enhancing wine quality and sustainability. Targeting both natural and agglomerated c stoppers, the solution is effective under liquid and steam conditions for still and sparkling wine closures. Lab results show 50–95% removal of haloisoles using natural biosorbents. The system preserves cork structure, integrates with existing processes, and supports the competitiveness of cork closures in the face of rising alternative closures. Backed by strong industry data—€230M turnover, 50% exports, 1,200+ jobs in Catalonia—the innovation strengthens the use of renewable materials and reduces cork taint, ensuring sensory quality and market resilience.
