Creation of clonal seed orchards for Douglas-fir germplasm conservation

Clonal seed orchards ensure sustainable, locally adapted Douglas-fir regeneration in Tuscany

or

Detail description

Genetic conservation of Douglas-fir is critical in Tuscany, where aging stands and climate change threaten regeneration. The Do.Na.To project establishes clonal seed orchards at two altitudes using superior genotypes from IUFO trials at Faltona and Vallombrosa. Managed by mountain municipal unions and supported by CREA-FL, these orchards ensure long-term germplasm preservation and sustainable supply of locally adapted, high-quality seedlings. This approach reduces reliance on foreign-sourced seedlings, minimizes pest introduction risks, and strengthens regional nursery capacity for climate-resilient reforestation.
