Forest Road Mapping for Sustainable Tourism and Management

OG SURF mapped forest roads in its test areas using GNSS receivers, classifying them by functionality and identifying maintenance issues. This supports sustainable forest management, FSC and PEF certification, and tourism accessibility for walking, cycling, and people with disabilities. The effort created a detailed map of the existing road network and condition, enabling identification of new trails to open. Despite historical management gaps that reduced usable infrastructure, low-cost GNSS and mobile apps proved effective for mapping. The innovation, led by UNIFI and implemented by OG SURF in Italy, is organisational in nature.
