Casa Sankara: Social Innovation for Migrant Farm Workers

Empowering migrant farm workers through social innovation and sustainable employment in Italy's agricultural sector

or

Detail description

A European Union-funded initiative led by Coldiretti and the University of Pisa to combat irregular labour in Italy’s agricultural sector through social innovation. Focused on migrant farm worker integration, the project highlights Ghetto Out-Casa Sankara, a migrant-led organisation in Puglia providing legal employment, decent housing, and social support to reduce reliance on exploitative intermediaries (*caporalato*). Through peer-to-peer exchanges, stakeholder visits, and the Humus Job initiative, the project promoted sustainable solutions, demonstrating a 619% social return on investment between 2017 and 2022, benefiting 1,000 migrants. The initiative underscores the power of community-driven models in transforming exploitation into economic participation, supported by EU grants and institutional collaboration.
