Locally produced compost substrates for sustainable nursery plant production in Catalonia

or

Detail description

This project, led by Belloch Forestal S.L. and funded by the European Union, developed locally produced compost-based substrates from organic waste—such as forest residues and nitrogen-rich materials—for sustainable nursery plant production. It evaluated the agronomic, environmental, and economic viability of using locally sourced raw materials in open-air composting systems, achieving mild natural acidification through nitrification. Trials with Celtis australis showed acceptable short-term growth, though optimized mixtures and long-term studies are needed. The project reduced production costs, lowered emissions through localised processing, and decreased reliance on imported substrates. Findings were disseminated via workshops, nursery visits, and presentations at the ROSEWOOD seminar in Florence (January 2020). Recommendations include improving substrate formulations, expanding environmental monitoring, and promoting wider adoption to enhance nursery productivity and sustainability. The initiative operated from June 2018 to September 2020 across Catalonia, supported by the Rural Development Program of Catalonia 2014–2020.
