Detail description
The average age of EU farm managers is high, with 32% aged 65 or over in 2016 and only 11% under 40. Volatile profitability, low prestige of rural jobs, demographic shifts, and increasing regulations reduce dairy farming’s appeal to youth. Succession planning is critical, involving estate planning, financial management, mentorship, and phased responsibility transfer. Young farmers may receive resettlement grants, low-interest loans, and early retirement support. Internships, education, and youth organisations aid preparation. Contingency planning and emotional support are essential. Positive factors include family involvement, self-employment, and rural lifestyle. Full control should transfer between ages 35 and 45. Key steps include skill assessment, training, and technology adoption. Economic and social resilience is moderate, with lower scores in technical efficiency, environmental impact, animal welfare, and societal perception. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant agreement No 101000770).
