A2A2 Milk Production: A2A2 Project and Parmigiano-Reggiano Initiative

Producing A2A2 milk for health-focused dairy markets with genetic selection and certification

or

Detail description

A2A2 milk contains predominantly beta-casein A2A2, a historically common variant now less prevalent due to selective breeding favoring A1. This niche market is growing, especially in New Zealand and Italy, where the Parmegregga Operational Group leads Parmigiano-Reggiano A2A2 production. Supported by the EU Horizon 2020 programme (grant No 101000770), the initiative promotes economic and social resilience in dairy farming. Producers use genetic selection via milk, blood, or hair testing to implement A2A2 breeding strategies—either gradual replacement or direct purchase—guided by consultants. Certification ensures consumer trust and market credibility. The project emphasizes sustainability, animal health, and public perception.
