Outsourcing Dairy Farming Machinery Work
Dairy farming increasingly relies on contracted machinery services to manage larger herds and reduce equipment costs.

Detail description
Over recent years, dairy farming has seen a decline in farmer numbers and an increase in average herd size, leading to greater reliance on contracted machinery services. Rising equipment costs make outsourcing practical and cost-effective. Core contracted tasks include silage production, manure spreading, tillage, crop sowing, pesticide application, hedge cutting, and land improvement. Contractors offer advanced, efficient equipment, reducing farmer investment and freeing time for herd and business management. Clear communication, agreed rates, and proper briefings are essential to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards. Farmers benefit from avoiding capital expenditure and supporting local contractors, though challenges include weather delays, need for improved yard access, and slurry tank logistics. A well-labeled farm map enhances coordination. The method scores moderately on economic and technical efficiency but lower on social resilience, environmental impact, and animal welfare. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.
