E-learning tool of the German ‘Initiative Tierwohl’ label

The BroilerNet project involves a bottom-up approach to identify challenges and innovation needs for broiler farmers in Europe, and to collect promising and already successfully implemented Good Practices to meet the challenges in questions. The top Good Practices selected by experts within the three thematic areas (animal health management, animal welfare and sustainability) have been summarized in factsheets. Broiler farmers are operating in a context that requires them to acquire more knowledge given the public concern for animal welfare. Farmer training can help to create awareness of animal welfare and greater understanding of the significance of welfare for successful animal production. The ‘Initiative Tierwohl’ (ITW) created such a training program within their label in Germany. For this, ITW offers an online training program (www.gefluegelbesserwisser.de), which includes comprehensive training for poultry farmers and their animal care takers that can be carried out at any time from home and serves as annual proof of training. In this training program, all areas of broiler husbandry are covered.
