Framework for Action Blueprint and Standardisation Engagement

Interactive blueprint for reducing food waste through expiry data and GS1 DataBar implementation

or

Detail description

This report details the dissemination and impact of the REFRESH Voluntary Agreement Blueprint and GS1 DataBar barcode implementation for reducing food waste. The Blueprint, accessible via WRAP and REFRESH websites and the REFRESH Community of Experts, was presented at an EU policy workshop in 2018, generating interest from multiple Member States. A webinar series in April–May 2019 reached 99 views and 39 attendees, with recordings and slides publicly available. Four VA workshops were held in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and Denmark, with others in discussion. Pilot Working Platforms in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Hungary tested GS1 DataBar to improve stock management and reduce waste through expiry date tracking. While benefits in stock control and markdowns were noted, adoption remains limited due to lack of shared data and business cases, highlighting the need for collaboration with standardisation bodies.
