The Andalusian Grazing-Firebreaks Network RAPCA

Sustainable grazing for fire risk reduction in Andalusian forests

or

Detail description

Targeted grazing using sheep, goats, and cattle reduces fire risk in Andalusian forests. The RAPCA network, established in 2005, supports 223 shepherds across 189 farms, managing 90,000 sheep, 20,000 goats, and 1,000 cows on 6,000 hectares. This payment for ecosystem services scheme maintains natural firebreaks in ecologically sensitive, high-risk areas, reducing reliance on mechanical fuel reduction. Backed by the Andalusian General Directorate of Natural Environment, the programme integrates traditional pastoralism with modern fire prevention, ensuring sustainable land management and local economic resilience.
