Mastitis in dairy cows is detectable through behavioural changes—such as reduced activity and altered lying times—and milk abnormalities, including increased electrical conductivity, somatic cell count, and lactate-dehydrogenase levels, alongside decreased lactose and milk yield. Clinical signs may include visible udder inflammation, while subclinical cases show no obvious symptoms. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Escherichia coli, entering via the teat canal and triggering immune responses. The condition incurs an average cost of 300€ per case. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant No 696367), this research reflects the author’s views only.
