Lamb Vigour and Survival: Key to Improved Flock Efficiency

Lambs that stand within 30 minutes show significantly better survival rates, with vigour strongly linked to maternal nutrition and management during gestation.

Detail description

Lambs that stand and suckle within 30 minutes show significantly higher survival rates. Lamb vigour—rated from Very Poor to Very Good based on standing time—correlates strongly with gestational nutrition. Optimal ewe nutrition, stress reduction, and timely dystocia intervention improve outcomes. Adequate colostrum intake is critical. Selecting for lamb vigour enhances survival and production efficiency. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant 727895).
