Body Condition Recovery and Flushing for Sheep Fertility Enhancement

Enhancing sheep fertility through targeted body condition management and strategic feeding protocols

Detail description

Enhancing sheep fertility and prolificacy through a two-phase management system: body condition recovery for thin ewes and rams (BCS < 2.5 or 3), followed by targeted flushing strategies 21 days before mating or AI. Guidelines include daily maize grain supplementation (200–250 g/head) during recovery, and species-specific flushing plans based on pasture type—short flushing with lupin or soybean meal for mature pastures, long flushing with mixed concentrates for moderate pastures, and herbage-based long flushing for high-availability mixed pastures. Ewes with optimal BCS (3–3.5) are not flushed. Implementation requires BCS assessment training, data recording, and cost evaluation.
