Nutritional Management by Litter Size for Ewes

Optimising concentrate feeding for ewes by litter size to improve lamb survival and colostrum quality

Detail description

Nutritional management tailored to litter size significantly improves ewe productivity and lamb survival. Energy requirements rise by 40% for singles, 60% for twins, and 70% for triplets in the final six weeks of pregnancy. Concentrate feeding recommendations vary by litter size, with quads requiring up to 1.0 kg/ewe/day in the final week. Grouping ewes by litter size enables optimal supplementation, supporting adequate colostrum, higher birth weights, and reduced lamb mortality. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant No 727895).
