FUTUREROOTS: Redesigning Root Architecture for Crop Efficiency
Redesigning root architecture for improved nutrient and water uptake in crops
or
Detail description
Root architecture determines nutrient and water uptake efficiency in crops. Deep roots access leached nitrate, while optimized root angles improve phosphate acquisition in topsoil. FUTUREROOTS leverages micro-CT imaging, wheat genetics, and mathematical modelling to identify genes controlling root traits like depth, angle, and density. The project aims to develop molecular markers and improved crop varieties for enhanced nutrient and water use efficiency. Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, it supports sustainable agriculture across diverse farm sizes in the EU, targeting farmers, contractors, and agricultural practitioners with technical or university-level education.
