Nondestructive mobile pest and disease detection for crops
Non-destructive mobile technologies for pest and disease detection in European vegetable crops
or
Detail description
Mobile applications using image-based algorithms enable non-destructive, early detection of pests and diseases in vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, alliums, and cabbages. These tools, available through free and subscription models on smartphones, support integrated pest management by identifying fungal diseases and key pests while minimising harm to beneficial insects. Developed under the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme (grant No. 862563), the SmartProtect project promotes affordable, scalable solutions for small-scale farmers across Europe. Tools such as Plantix, Cropyalyzer, and Agri Tech offer diagnostics in English, Spanish, and French, with German details in appendices. The project, completed in 2022 and licensed under CC-BY, enhances decision-making in open fields and greenhouses, with public access to results, contact details, and the project website (smartprotect-h2020.eu).
