Complete sward renewal replaces unproductive or weedy grasslands with desired forage species using non-selective herbicides like glyphosate or mechanical methods such as ploughing and discing. It involves seedbed preparation and reseeding with species like meadow fescue, timothy, red clover, chicory, or plantain to improve forage quality, drought resilience, and biodiversity. Success depends on correcting soil issues like compaction, pH imbalance, and nutrient deficiencies through liming and organic amendments. Best results occur in permanent grasslands with 5–8 species tailored to moisture levels—drier areas favor cock’s-foot and red fescue, while wetter areas may use reed canary-grass. Early spring or late summer sowing maximizes establishment, avoiding peat-muck soils. Herbicide-treated direct drilling reduces erosion and improves seed-to-soil contact. Despite high costs and risks of weed resurgence or emissions from tillage, yield increases of 2–4 times are reported in regions like the White Carpathians and Poland. Profitability is highest when replacing low-productivity swards. Long-term success requires 15–30% legumes in mixes and proper post-renewal management.
