Alcarràs Composting Plant: Circular Bioeconomy Initiative

Pioneering composting plant in Catalonia turns livestock waste into sustainable fertiliser for regional agriculture

or

Detail description

The Alcarrás Bioproductors composting plant, launched in 2022 in Lleida’s Segrià region, processes 27,000 tonnes of livestock manure and urban biomass annually to produce high-quality organic fertiliser. Funded by the Lleida economic transformation plan and the Patronat de Promocio Economica, the project unites 150 livestock farms and supports the circular bioeconomy. The facility, part of the BioHub Km0 initiative, supplies local agriculture and exports fertiliser to France. A fair transport cost model ensures equitable participation. The project is exploring expansion to include a biogas plant for electricity generation and irrigation-quality water. This model sets a precedent for replicating in livestock-intensive regions.
