Small-scale Pellet Production in Umbria, Italy

Small-scale pellet production supports rural resilience in Umbria's forest economy

or

Detail description

Small-scale family-owned logging firm in Umbria, Italy, produces wood pellets to diversify income amid declining firewood demand. Since 2013, Pierini has operated a low-investment, modular pellet plant with one full-time worker, producing around 2,000 tonnes of wood annually. The firm processes locally sourced wood, removing most bark, and incurs total production costs of approximately 300 € per tonne. The 2022 energy crisis boosted firewood prices and highlighted the risks of relying on imported raw materials—over 80% of which are imported. Local pellet production offers a sustainable, resilient alternative, supporting rural economies and energy independence. The project demonstrates how small-scale vertical integration in the forest-wood chain can enhance local viability and competitiveness in the bioeconomy.
