Promote insects as alternative protein in broiler chicken feed

Insects as sustainable protein sources in broiler chicken feed production

or

Detail description

Insects, particularly Black Soldier Fly, Common Housefly, and Yellow Mealworm, offer a sustainable, nutrient-rich protein alternative to plant-based feeds in broiler chicken production. This factsheet highlights their high digestibility, essential amino acids, phosphorus, and vitamin content, supporting reduced reliance on imported soya and mitigating environmental impacts like deforestation. Regulation (EU) No 2021/1372 permits insect-based processed animal proteins in poultry feed, though cross-contamination risks with ruminant feed require strict controls. These insects are ideal for mass production and are increasingly used in European feed due to their favourable nutritional profile and low ecological footprint.
