A superior method for depopulating end-of-lay hens from enriched cages
A new trolley system for humane and efficient depopulation of end-of-lay hens in enriched cages
or
Detail description
The egg industry traditionally transports end-of-lay hens by inverting them by legs over long distances, causing stress and physical strain. This technical note presents a welfare-friendly alternative: a four-drawer trolley with swivel wheels designed for use in enriched cage systems. The trolley enables efficient, low-stress transport from house aisles to external modules, reducing injury and mortality. A raised platform and alignment plates ensure smooth docking. The system is compatible with existing infrastructure, improves worker satisfaction, and enhances hen welfare. It is funded by the European Union.
