COOPID infographic – Bioeconomy in the hemp sector
Hemp cultivation for sustainable textiles, food, and construction materials in the EU
Detail description
Industrial hemp cultivation is expanding globally due to its versatile uses in food, textiles, construction, and personal care products. It supports sustainable agriculture through high productivity, low fertilizer and pesticide needs, and benefits crop rotation, biodiversity, and climate resilience. In the EU, hemp land use rose from 20.54k hectares in 2015 to 50,081 hectares in 2018, a 614% increase since 1993. The COOPID EU Project (Grant No. 101000519) tracks this growth, with Moellerup Brands leading in seed and stem processing for oils, protein flour, fibres, and insulation materials. Industrial hemp is non-psychoactive (THC <0.3%), distinct from high-THC cannabis used medically or recreationally.
