Varroa: Impact, Infestation Assessment Methods, and Control Strategies

This paper examines the global threat posed by the ectoparasite Varroa destructor to honey bee health at both individual and colony levels. It reviews validated monitoring techniques for seasonal infestation dynamics and evaluates treatment strategies, including end-of-season acaricide applications and selective breeding for varroa-resistant bees.

Detaillierte Beschreibung

Varroa destructor is a globally prevalent ectoparasitic mite that poses a principal pathogenic threat to European honey bee colonies, feeding on bee hemolymph and facilitating the transmission of multiple viruses. Research conducted by the UMT PrADE consortium characterized key physiological impacts of varroa parasitism on individual bees and uncovered mechanisms of the varroa–virus association. The team developed and validated precise techniques—such as sugar shake, brood uncapping, and phoretic mite counts—to monitor seasonal infestation dynamics. Controlled field assays assessed the efficacy of end-of-season acaricide treatments and tested innovative in-season intervention protocols. Ongoing work focuses on harnessing natural resistance by selectively breeding varroa-tolerant honey bee populations as a sustainable management strategy.
