Seed Productivity: The Challenge for Developing Festulolium Hybrids Between Fescue and Ryegrass in Forage Grasses

This study assesses genetic variability in seed productivity of Festulolium hybrids between fescue and ryegrass. It shows that a single backcross into tetraploid ryegrass restores seed yield in Festulolium, whereas amphiploid forms remain deficient, and recommends genomic approaches and targeted testing to improve seed production.

This paper analyzes seed productivity challenges in Festulolium, interspecific hybrids of Festuca and Lolium designed for improved forage under climatic stress. Thirty-six varieties exist in Europe with diverse genetic combinations. Research measured genetic variability in seed yield and pollen fertility across varieties and breeding material, down to individual plants. Results indicate that a single backcross into any tetraploid ryegrass fully restores seed productivity, whereas amphiploid forms from F. pratensis or F. glaucescens remain deficient and suffer rapid germination decline. The authors propose genome remodeling via interspecific recombination and molecular tools as strategies to enhance seed yield and call for precise genetic profiling and targeted VCU testing for breeding investment.
