In this review, R&D engineers from the French National Forest Service analyze how climate change shapes sustainable forest management in public forests of mainland France. They examine four perspectives: impacts and risk prevention with crisis management; adaptation of management practices; contribution to mitigation via wood production and use; and continuity and quality of ecosystem services. The analysis finds no fundamental conflicts among these dimensions, highlights opportunities driven by bioeconomy innovations, emphasizes the need for clearer and integrated management objectives—particularly for biodiversity conservation—and underscores the importance of targeted R&D and innovation to support active, diversified forest management that secures ecosystem services, mitigates risks, and ensures supply to forest industries.
