Waterpark Zuid-Holland: Sustainable Agriculture and Water Management in South Holland

The Waterpark Zuid-Holland project integrates sustainable agriculture, water management, and ecological restoration in South Holland, focusing on rural resilience and farmer-led innovation. Initiated by LTO Noord with regional support, it targets biodiversity enhancement, soil and water quality improvement, and income diversification through nature-inclusive farming, recreation, and short supply chains. Key sites include Ouddorp and Kaggelplassen, where farmers adopted salt-tolerant crops, reduced chemical inputs, and implemented peat-saving techniques. The project advanced through stakeholder workshops, ecological monitoring, and collaboration with water authorities and nature organisations. Outcomes highlight improved ecological corridors, reduced emissions, and new economic models. Future success depends on regional marketing, policy advocacy, and public-private partnerships aligned with EU and provincial funding. The initiative exemplifies an integrated approach to balancing agricultural productivity with environmental sustainability in peat-rich rural landscapes.
