In response to the 2018 requirement for 100% organic monogastric feed, the CASDAR ProtéAB program assessed the capacity of regionally grown grain legumes (faba bean, peas, lupin, and soybean) to replace conventional protein sources. An analysis of national protein supply and demand revealed a deficit of approximately 12,000 tonnes, indicating growth potential for legume cultivation. Environmental assessments highlighted reduced energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per hectare, though rotational effects were complex. Agronomic trials (120 varietal tests) demonstrated yield variability and the need for improved genetics. Economic case studies and simulations showed varied profitability, enhanced on-farm feed autonomy, and resilience to market fluctuations. Zootechnical trials in pigs and laying hens indicated performance trade-offs with high inclusion rates, emphasizing the importance of balanced feed formulations.
