White clover in the Irish pasture-based system
White clover can reduce nitrogen fertiliser requirements, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve productivity and profitability in pasture-based livestock systems.
Detaljeret beskrivelse
This practice abstract presents the integration of white clover into pasture-based farming systems as a strategy to reduce nitrogen fertiliser use and improve environmental performance.
White clover fixes atmospheric nitrogen through biological nitrogen fixation, reducing the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and lowering nitrous oxide emissions. Research in Ireland has shown that nitrogen fertiliser use can be reduced by up to 40% in grass-clover swards without compromising herbage production.
Additional benefits include improved forage quality, increased nitrogen use efficiency, enhanced livestock performance, and greater farm profitability. Successful establishment requires appropriate soil conditions, grazing management, and long-term pasture planning.
