The University of Aveiro team contributes to the AQUACOMBINE project through Work Package 7, focusing on assessing the safety and nutritional impact of Salicornia as a sustainable feed ingredient in aquaculture. Tasks 7.3 and 7.5 evaluate DNA integrity, antioxidant defences, and biochemical profiles in fish and shrimp, revealing potential mild, transient genetic damage that may activate protective mechanisms. The research supports food safety, animal health, and sustainability, aligning with UN SDGs 2, 6, 12, and 14. Findings suggest Salicornia is a viable, cost-effective alternative to animal proteins without compromising productivity. The team, led by Prof. Mário Pacheco and including Dr. Sofia Guilherme and Ana Veríssimo, conducts studies at LAQV-Requimte and CESAM, with laboratory work on European bass and Pacific white shrimp. The project reflects the university’s commitment to sustainable science.
