This study assesses the technical, economic, and environmental benefits of a novel bioactive hydroponic substrate derived from the seagrass Zostera noltii by comparing it to conventional rockwool and coconut fiber substrates in tomato and cucumber cultivation. It evaluates the specific action of zosteric acid to inhibit root phytopathogen adhesion, the substrate's impact on microbial rhizosphere communities, and its potential to enhance water and nutrient use efficiency while supporting drainage water recycling. Experimental results from in vitro and in planta trials informed the implementation and optimization of a pilot greenhouse strategy.
