Water disinfection
The BroilerNet project involves a bottom-up approach to identify challenges and innovation needs for broiler farmers in Europe, and to collect promising and already successfully implemented Good Practices to meet the challenges in questions. The top Good Practices selected by experts within the three thematic areas (animal health management, animal welfare and sustainability) have been summarized in factsheets. Water can be a very important factor to impair flocks’ biosecurity Additional water disinfection greatly protects the farm from waterborne infections. It can be applied in a variety of ways. In some cases, old water distribution networks coupled with low residual antimicrobial activity in the water can facilitate microbiological contamination. Most time the treatment is carried out at water tanks that are inside the farm, right before the distribution to the birds. Disinfectants are carefully selected to have some residual effect in order to also protect water the distribution network of the farm. Water pH might also have to be adjusted.
