Green Space Planning and Management to Deliver Ecosystem Service Bundles under Regulatory Constraints: Case Study of the City of Rennes

Over the past four decades, the City of Rennes has progressively adopted an ecological approach to its public green spaces. Initially driven by budget constraints in the 1980s, differentiated management was institutionalized to optimize resources, later reinforced by environmental objectives and pesticide bans under the Labbé Law. Rennes now maintains 850 hectares of green areas with differentiated care, supported by a dedicated workforce and the Ecojardin label managed by Plante & Cité. Communication efforts have increased resident acceptance of spontaneous vegetation, while ecological stormwater management and the regional green-blue network further integrate urban nature and ecosystem services into territorial planning.
