Risk Prediction of Wireworm Damage in Potato Crops and Sustainable Control Strategies

The TAUPIC project (2020–2024) developed predictive models to forecast damage risk from wireworms (Agriotes spp.) in potato fields and evaluated sustainable control methods including biocontrol, resistant varieties, and integrated pest management tools.

In a context of declining availability of chemical solutions, wireworm larvae (Agriotes spp.) have become major pests of potato crops. The TAUPIC project (2020–2024) brought together a broad consortium to develop risk prediction tools, assess alternative solutions (biocontrol, varieties, companion crops), and initiate integrated pest management strategies. The results show (i) a ranking of risk factors, (ii) strong spatial and temporal variability in infestations, (iii) partial effectiveness of biocontrol (0–45%), (iv) significant varietal differences linked to metabolic profiles, and (v) the development of innovative tools (DNA barcoding, rearing methods, olfactometry). TAUPIC has established a solid knowledge base and paves the way for sustainable protection against wireworms (Agriotes spp.).
