Optimise the time between the last calving and slaughter in beef farms
Early identification of non-pregnant cows and faster finishing strategies can improve herd productivity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase resource efficiency in beef farming systems.
Detaljan opis
This practice abstract describes management strategies to reduce the time between the last calving and slaughter of cull cows in beef production systems.
Early pregnancy diagnosis, identification of non-pregnant animals and rapid finishing programmes allow farmers to reduce the time that unproductive animals remain on the farm. This improves herd productivity, reduces feed and housing requirements and contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Additional measures include improved herd body condition management, strategic feeding of cull cows and better reproductive monitoring. Together, these practices enhance economic performance while reducing the environmental footprint of beef production.
