Characterization of Sources of Resistance to Leaf Rust in Durum Wheat

This study evaluated the resistance of 184 durum wheat entries to leaf rust across field trials in France and Mexico and glasshouse assays, identifying effective resistance genes and genomic loci.

Detail description

The study characterized resistance to Puccinia triticina in a panel of 184 durum wheat entries from French, European, North African, and CIMMYT/ICARDA germplasm. These entries were phenotyped for leaf rust resistance in field trials across four sites in France and two sites in Mexico during 2009 and 2010, and in a glasshouse using nine rust pathotypes. Resistance gene efficacy varied: Lr27+31 and Lr3 were effective in France but broken in Mexico, while Lr61, LrCamayo, Lr19, and Lr47 were effective in both regions. Association mapping with 1300 DArT markers identified two QTLs on chromosomes 2B and 6B and a major gene Lr14a on chromosome 7B.
