In this study, 190 grain elevators in France were surveyed in 2010–2011 to assess insect infestation in stored wheat. Over 25% of spring samples contained at least one insect, with Sitophilus oryzae and Rhyzopertha dominica the most frequent species. The authors identified major risk factors—flat storage design, absence of fixed temperature monitoring, and lack of sanitation of empty bins—and found that integrated pest management (IPM) principles were largely unknown to silo operators. Preventive measures, including optimized grain aeration based on local climatic data, were proposed. Curative methods were evaluated, revealing that no single alternative active ingredient matched current insecticide efficacy; phosphine fumigation faces limitations due to silo tightness and staffing constraints, while pilot heat disinfestation in grain dryers shows promising corrective potential.
