Halophytes for Biogas Production: Salicornia europaea and ramosissima Biomethane Yields

Halophytes show high potential for biogas production under saline conditions and aquaculture effluent irrigation

or

Detail description

Halophytes Salicornia europaea and Salicornia ramosissima show high potential as biogas feedstocks under saline conditions. Biomethane yields reached 250 mL CH4/gVS for S. europaea and up to 300 mL CH4/gVS for S. ramosissima, with no inhibition observed at NaCl concentrations up to 2400 mg/L. Drying or fractionating biomass increased yields to 149 m3 CH4/t. The study, part of the AQUACOMBINE project, explores circular integration of aquaculture, farming, and bioprocessing for bioenergy and bioproducts. Conducted in Germany, Denmark, and Portugal, it was published in Fermentation (2022), CC BY.
