After reminding the general context of climate change and specifically highlighting changes related to warming, the relative vulnerability of fruit tree farming is underlined, based on many of its biological and economic characteristics. Unexpectedly, this vulnerability has already manifested during the 2000s through production irregularities in certain species in southern France. A real challenge thus appears, which must prompt the relevant scientific and professional communities to engage with it, even though significant uncertainties remain regarding climate predictions. Characterising and analysing the issues (impacts and consequences) is a fundamental aspect of addressing this challenge, with these issues needing to be regularly reviewed using modelling. Impacts and consequences are specified in particular for flowering traits that have already been the subject of in-depth initial studies. Other impacts, which have been less studied but could be concerning (related to changes in parasitism and reduced water availability), are briefly mentioned. However, the analysis of these issues suggests that opportunities could also be leveraged, even if their implementation would likely lead to socio-economic upheavals (changes in farming practices and production systems). In parallel, based on this characterisation, reflecting on strategies to address these issues constitutes another essential aspect for effectively responding to the consequences of climate change. Various strategies are discussed, with emphasis on the fact that the best response to the challenge will likely result from evolving combinations of possible strategies.
