Detail description
This presentation offers a synthesis of knowledge on peri-urban farming. Statistical studies show that peri-urban agriculture has structural specificities: smaller, more intensive farms. This form of agriculture also appears diverse in terms of production, structures, and sales methods. This is underlined by local monographs, which also highlight processes of development of these differentiated farming systems. The presentation then provides a more detailed analysis of farms near Angers, Dijon, and Montpellier, based on recent field research. This shows that contrasts among peri-urban farms are primarily explained by the characteristics of the regional agriculture within which the city is situated. Nevertheless, similar agricultural dynamics can be observed near cities. Combining these observations allows us to identify three logics of development for peri-urban farms: (i) using the abundance of agricultural land as a resource to respond to urban demands; (ii) leveraging the peri-urban location to achieve a commercial advantage and capture local opportunities; (iii) developing residential strategies that incorporate agriculture.
