Nutrient Recovery from Manure and Slurry: BIOREFINE Project

Nutrient recovery from manure and slurry is critical for sustainable agriculture in intensive livestock regions like The Netherlands and Flanders. This document details techniques such as drying, composting, biogas production, phosphorus precipitation, and pyrolysis for biochar, supported by the EU-funded BIOREFINE project (2011–2016). It covers methods for treating pig slurry fractions, ammonia stripping, and scrubbing, with case studies from European pilot plants. The project, involving institutions including Ghent University, University of Leeds, and Vlaco, evaluates technologies by scale and maturity.
