Feeding insects to organic layers for sustainable protein

Insects as sustainable protein sources for organic monogastric livestock feeding

or

Detail description

Insect-based feeding strategies offer a sustainable, local solution for meeting protein and essential amino acid needs in monogastric livestock within organic farming. Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) provide a balanced amino acid profile rich in lysine, threonine, methionine, and tryptophan, suitable for poultry, swine, and fish. A FiBL trial found that feeding 10 g of live mealworms per day to laying hens did not increase aggression. While processed insect protein is restricted as 'animal protein' in EU feed regulations, feeding live larvae remains permitted. This document presents practical insights from the OK-Net EcoFeed initiative, based on research and field trials, on integrating live insects into organic feed systems despite challenges related to high fat content.
