This case study presents a cost-benefit analysis of a low-input grazing system in Italy, focusing on local cattle breeds in steep terrains. It evaluates minimal initial and ongoing costs across authorisation, advisory services, infrastructure, certification, and working capital. Significant reductions in fertiliser, pesticide, and feed use are observed, though energy savings and product value addition are limited. Environmental benefits are minimal except for improved animal health and welfare. Social impacts, including workload reduction and youth engagement, are low. Funded by the European Union, the analysis emphasizes reducing chemical inputs and enhancing animal welfare.
