Use of Pelleted Straw in Broiler Farm Litter
Sustainable bedding solution using pelleted straw in broiler farming
or
Detail description
Bedding in broiler farms is vital for animal welfare and environmental sustainability. Poor management causes soil and groundwater pollution, harmful gas emissions, and increased disease risk. The Cavana farm in Imola, Italy, uses pelleted straw—denser, more absorbent, and longer-lasting than chopped straw—reducing the need for frequent changes. This improves hygiene, minimizes odors, and supports waste recycling. Pelleted straw decreases foot injuries, enhances comfort, and promotes natural aeration through bird movement, maintaining dry, healthy litter. Used at 2–3 kg/m² with seasonal adjustments, it exemplifies a sustainable, innovative approach. Funded by the European Commission via BroilerNet.eu and eip-agri.
