Gas Loop: Ammonia Emissions Capture for a Virtuous Nitrogen Cycle in Pig Farming
The Gas Loop project implemented an ammonia air treatment system in pig farms to capture ammonia emissions for conversion into ammonium sulfate fertilizer, reducing chemical inputs and greenhouse gas emissions while improving animal welfare and productivity.
Detail description
Gas Loop has developed and monitored an air washing system that removes ammonia from the air of animal housing and recovers it in an ammonium sulphate solution. This increases animal welfare and productivity due to better air quality inside the pig housing. The ammonia concentration was 62% lower than in untreated rooms. Ammonia emissions into the atmosphere were reduced by 54%. Ammonia emissions avoided 1,94 kg NH3/animal place per year. The best breeding conditions increase the feed conversion rate and nitrogen use efficiency. An assessment of economic feasibility of the ammonia air treatment system innovation has been carried out based on a case study. The costs of a complete installation or building arrangement for afterwards installation of the ammonia air treatment system have been estimated.
