Detail description

Greece’s bioeconomy employs ~672,000 people with an added value of €12 billion, led by the food & agriculture sector which provides ~90% of biomass supply and use (primarily for food/feed). Despite 6.6 million ha of forests, forestry’s current share is small but holds significant potential if sustainably managed. Bioenergy and biomaterials have grown rapidly in recent years and are expected to expand as Greece transitions to a low-carbon model. Key barriers include demographics, infrastructure and long supply chains, access to finance, and complex licensing. Policy drivers span the Smart Specialization Strategy, the National Strategy on Circular Economy, and the National Energy & Climate Plan 2030 / 2050 Roadmap; a wave of SMEs (e.g., Procos, Matrix Pack, PHEE, Staramaki, Coffeco, BioCatPolymers, BioSFera) illustrates innovation on the ground.
