Prescribed Burns in Chios, Greece: Two-Year Pilot Project Results

Prescribed burns enhance forest resilience and fuel management in Mediterranean ecosystems

or

Detail description

A two-year pilot project on prescribed burns in Chios, Greece, evaluated the use of controlled fire for forest fuel management and enhancing ecological and social resilience. Led by ELGO DIMITRA, WWF Greece, and local agencies, the project assessed fire behavior, soil properties, plant biodiversity, and physiological responses. Results showed no significant negative impacts, with positive effects on plant diversity. The trials also served as training for firefighters and land managers. Despite early attempts in the 1970s, prescribed burning was discontinued due to lack of funding, legal support, and institutional frameworks. This 2021 project marks a renewed effort to establish prescribed fire as a recognised tool in Greece, informed by Mediterranean best practices and supported by local authorities.
