Roof insulation and photovoltaics for broiler farms
Solar-powered broiler farm reduces energy costs and improves animal welfare
or
Detail description
The BroilerNet project showcases a broiler farm that reduced energy costs and improved production efficiency by installing a 50 kW photovoltaic system and upgrading roof insulation with 15 mm polystyrene. The farm generated 62% of its electricity in 2013, cutting reliance on the grid, lowering heating use by 52%, and improving animal welfare and performance: mortality dropped 25%, daily weight gain rose 7%, and feed conversion improved by 2.5%. Enhanced insulation also reduced water use and ammonia emissions, contributing to sustainable broiler production. Part of the European Commission’s EIP-Agri programme.
