Use of recycled manure solids as cow bedding in cubicles

Recycled manure solids as sustainable bedding in dairy cow cubicles: benefits, challenges, and best practices

or

Detail description

Interest in recycled manure solids (RMS) as cow bedding is growing due to benefits including improved cow comfort, cost savings, and environmental sustainability. RMS is produced via mechanical separation of slurry using a screw press, with solids applied immediately to cubicles in thin layers to reduce moisture. Key advantages are on-farm production, renewability, softness, reduced skin lesions compared to sand, and lower blockage risk. Proper management requires prompt use, target dry matter of 35%, and controlled barn conditions. Recommended practices include frequent bedding removal, exclusive use of farm-sourced RMS, and health monitoring. Equipment includes a separator, mixer, and distribution system, with installation costs between €25,000 and €35,000. Despite challenges in technical efficiency and societal perception, RMS is valued for animal welfare. Project funded by Horizon 2020 (grant No 101000770).
