Essai de carottes sur buttes enherbées
or
Detail description
This document presents a trial of growing carrots on grass mounds. This is an initial test of the feasibility of this technique.
This initial trial is promising and the tests should be continued using suitable equipment on a plot that is not subject to flooding.
In northern France and Belgium, potato growers using soil conservation agriculture (SCA) have developed a new technique that eliminates the need for ploughing and limits spring tillage. Deep tillage is carried out in late summer/early autumn when the soil can still be worked before winter. Mounds are then formed and a cover crop is planted for the winter. It is this cover crop that helps to structure the soil over the winter while providing the traditional benefits of a cover crop.
Here, the aim of the trial is to test the feasibility of transposing this mounding technique to a carrot crop and its effectiveness in weed management.
